Since 1946, the Harold J Van Westrienen Master Teacher Award will be presented to one outstanding master Industrial/Technology Education teacher in the State of Michigan. The person to be honored with this award is selected by the Master Teacher Award Committee of the Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society.

                 To be eligible for the Master Teacher Award, a candidate must have taught Industrial Technology education in the state of Michigan for a minimum of ten years, been an active member of the Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society for the past three years and nominated by a fellow educator. The qualified candidates are then evaluated on ability to motivate and use many teaching techniques. They must show ingenuity in the classroom and demonstrate a well-rounded philosophy in Industrial/Technology education. A candidate must also have industrial work experience, and been active in professional organizations and community activities.

                 The Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society established an award in 1970 to honor hardworking individuals who have made significant contributions to promote the goals and objectives of Industrial/Technology education through service to the Society. The first recipient of the award was Paul M. Shilling. Since then, the award has been known as the Paul M. Shilling Distinguished Service Award. Paul served the Society in numerous capacities, including those of President and Vice-President.

                 The Lifetime Achievement Award was created to honor a retired member who spent their professional lifetime making significant contributions to MITES and our profession.

                 The Earl Bedell Publicity Award is presented to members who have made the greatest contributions in the area of public relations and improving the image of Industrial/Technology education. Each of the nominees is then asked to submit examples of their publicity efforts to the selection committee. After evaluating the submitted materials, the committee will select the person(s) worthy of the award. The award plaque is presented at the Annual Banquet.

                 The President-elect becomes President for 2009-10 and the Convention Chairperson for 2010-2011. The President-elect must have been a MITES member for four consecutive years before becoming president and must have served on the MITES Board for two of the four years.

                 The Chrysler Foundation’s Closing the Technology Gap in Education Awards recognize Michigan public school educators who have taken extra steps to stimulate students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
