Scale Models

Rules for Category:

Suggested sizes, materials and construction:

  • ½ model, divided down the centerline of vehicle.

  • 18” x 3’ ¾” plywood base or melamine particle board.

  • Armature constructed from 2’ “pink foam” readily available at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

  • Foam buck mounted to base with two 2” x 2” x 6” long pieces of pine screwed to the base from the bottom side.

  • Foam built up in layers and glued together with “Gorilla Glue”.

Applying the polymer (oil based) clay:

  • Heat clay in commercial toaster (bread) oven to 145 degrees.

  • Apply clay in long pressured strokes wearing non-stick work gloves.

  • Set 12” x 3’ closet door mirror at centerline of car using 90- degree angle brackets. Mirrors available at Ikea Furniture Store.

Sealing and painting the clay model:

  • Seal the model with brush or spray on Bull’s Eye Shellac or paint with suitable automotive epoxy sealer.

  • Optional - apply surfacing primer and block sand.

  • Paint with automotive type paint: base/clear or enamel.

Wheels and tires:

  • Wheels can be made out of wood or aluminum and turned on a lathe.

  • Other options are cardboard, foam, or similar shop materials.

  • Tires can be cast with epoxy, foam, or rubber.

Trim and decals:

  • Airbrush, pinstripe, or machine-cut graphics acceptable. Dinoc water decals applied on glass areas.
